You are ONE YEAR OLD TODAY! And you are absolutely PERFECT!
(Minus the most exhausting night of our life so far to date! But we won’t talk about THAT today. Especially because at 3:30am you finally stopped crying and we all fell asleep together in bed – and daddy snapped a couple pictures this morning of you all cuddled up to me. So even though you are a little bug for keeping us up all night long, just look how totally perfect you are.) We couldn’t love anything more.

Happy Birthday Cooper!
Today you are one year old, and in that one year you’ve brought me a lifetime of love and joy. You are an exceptional little boy (barely even a baby anymore!), and sure I know your dad is supposed to say that, but I’m confident that it’s true from anyone’s perspective.
Watching you grow from a tiny baby of just over 6 and a half pounds into the energetic and ebullient toddler you are today (and sharing that experience with your mom) has been the greatest experience of my life.
Every day I come home from work, and I see you in the window at the front of the house – just peering out over the window sill – and hear “da da”. Every night we read a book together. Sometimes you’re more interested in looking over your shoulder to see when the milk will arrive, but that’s OK, because then you turn to me and put your hands up in a questioning gesture: “where’s the milk?!?”. That little game is at least as much fun as the book.
And every day you do something that you didn’t do the day before, or ever. I’m right there with you every step of the way. Rediscovering everything there is to discover about being alive, being human, being loved and living in this world. You’re taking me on a fantastic voyage. A journey of discovery, and it’s absolutely magical.
I can’t wait to see what the next year and all the years to come have in store for you. I promise to always be there for you, always love you, and always be your biggest fan. And to always have a bedtime story, for as long as you want it.

Dear Cooper,
I've been thinking about this day since the day you were born. Actually, I've been thinking about it even before you were born. I always wondered what it would be like to watch my baby turn one. To see them sitting in their highchair, smashing cake all over their face, to see the big toothy smile, and their wide innocent loving eyes. I imagined what a magical moment it would be, and how wonderful it would be to witness and be a part of. And now here we are. Your big day. I can't believe you are already one year old. My baby is ONE already! Last year at this time, you were still inside of me, just about to be born, just ready to take your first breathe and cry your first cry, and drink your first milk, and snuggle up into our arms -- so right and so perfect and so safe in our arms. The moment you were placed in my arms, I felt like all was right with the world. And I knew that you were there to teach us all in the possibilities of miracles and to never ever give up. You are strong and determined and you wanted to be born so badly Cooper. You have a purpose on this planet, Cooper, that much I know for sure. You wanted to be here and you needed to be here for something special. And I can't wait to watch you grow and find out exactly who you will become, because I know it will be a person of substance in this world. Someone special. Just as you were the moment you were born. I can't believe, looking back on that day, that here we are, one year later already. In fact, I didn't think it would be so hard to watch you turn one, as I think about all the things I will miss. I wish I could bottle you up and keep you my little baby forever. You have been the best baby a mother could hope for, and I had no idea how much I could love one little being. The way it feels to hold you in my arms and rock you and the way you look up and smile into my eyes and say momma. So sweet and innocent and perfect. My love for you is endless, it overflows when I look at you. You are perfect to me in every single way. And I am the luckiest person in the world to have you in my life. I want you to know that I will love you forever, and I will always be here for you. And even when you are all grown up (no no no!) you will always be my perfect little baby, and I will always love you more than humanly possible. You are a true miracle in our lives. Your daddy and I are so blessed and in awe at what a miracle it is to watch you grow. Your first breath, your first smile, the first time you rolled over, the first time you sat up, ate food, the first time you stood, as we watched you walk -- and every moment in between. Yes, even all those sleepless nights – I loved every moment of rocking and holding and snuggling up to you in our bed. You have filled our lives up with even more love than we knew was possible as you made us a family. And we are so proud of you and the person that you are becoming.
