Cooper scared us so badly today when he had a seizure and lost consciousness for about 60 seconds. He had a seizure when he was 7 months old too, and it lasted about the same amount of time, minus the shaking.
It was the worst feeling ever, watching him and feeling so helpless. Luckily mommy, daddy, grandpa were all there to help and a nurse came over and helped us through it. Sadie was a great big cousin and was very concerned for her little cousin and helped by calling nana, who just left to check on the Thanksgiving turkey know.
The day had been so great, it’s hard to know what happened or why. The only thing that we can think of is that it was a very hot day and he could have been overheated because of such an active exciting morning. And he hadn’t had much water that day. The other thing that may have set him off was the face –painting, which he was watching about a minute before he had the seizure. He was clearly scared by this, and started to cry. That;s when mommy carried him away and about a minute later, the episode happened.
The seizure (for our records)
· Lisa was carrying Cooper away from the face painting, which had upset him.
· She felt him start to go stiff in her arms, and he began to shake (for 3 to 10 seconds).
· After the shaking he went limp in her arms, and was completely unresponsive.
· He had some spittle forming at the corners of his mouth, and was making some coughing, not quite choking noises.
· Lisa called David over, and David took Cooper to sit in the shade while Lisa got water.
· He stayed unresponsive until Lisa returned with the cold water, which she splashed on his face. (He may have been coming out of the unresponsive state just prior to this).
· He snapped out of the unresponsive state and began screaming and crying very loudly.
· The whole thing was about 60 seconds.
· Lisa called 911, and the ambulance came. A nurse told us to undress COoper and put him on his side.
· Ambulance arrived, we talked to them, then the paramedics examined Cooper in the back of the ambulance.
· At this point when the ambulance arrived, the entire scenario has been 10 minutes or less.
· Paramedics checked his blood sugar (6.x), temperature, pulse, oxygen content and other vital signs had come back to normal.
· Afterwards, he was aware but listless and quite for the car ride home.
And then finally, he got some milk at home and spoke. He asked for his teletubbies! THen he snapped back to his usually happy self. THANK GOODNESS!!!
Here are a couple of pictures that were snapped by Grandpa at some point after the worst was over.
Afterwards, Cooper just laid in our arms and didn’t speak for about an hour. He was white as a little ghost.
Oh Cooper, what a scare you gave your mom and dad. We love you very much and are so thankful you are okay. Please don’t ever scare us like that again!!!!
